Let The Resolutions Begin

Last week I began testing out my training options for 2016.  I tried everything - I woke up early, I ran at lunch, I ran after work.  I tried out some meal preparation plans - healthy options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I went to Costco and loaded up on the things I thought I would need for the coming weeks.  I tend to eat healthier when I make my own meals - it's just finding the time to make them that is sometimes tough.

Cucumbers, tomatoes, tuna made with a mustard/agave mix instead of mayo, red onion and my secret ingredient: sunflower seeeds.

I'm in a good frame of mind and ready to give this an honest go.  Since I spent Thursday through Saturday celebrating the New Year, Sunday was my first real Resolution day of 2016.  It went very well.  I calculated my calorie intake on the myfitnesspal app, logging about 1500 low-carb calories on the day.  I also got two workouts in - a 50 minute session on the elliptical and a 2.5 mile run.  I have to admit, I wasn't so enamored with the run and was hoping to do more.  But it's the first day and I also had to deal with the heartbreak of the Jets blowing their chance at the playoffs, so I'm cutting myself a break and just threw in a few penalty planks for the hell of it.

A high-caloric evening with friends at Medieval Times to officially end 2015.

I have also started writing my book and it's a complete mess.  I start, I stop, I write when I have time and email portions of it to myself so I can try to piece it together where it might fit.  I constantly lose things and, well, let's just say that this will be a major work-in-progress.  I guess I never thought it was going to be easy, which is why it's a resolution in the first place.

I have also been contemplating deferring my entry into the Ft. Lauderdale A1A Marathon.  I'm not in marathon shape at all and it's only about six weeks away.  I haven't made travel plans and I feel as though I'm so focused on my personal goals for 2016 that at this point it might even get in the way.  There are only so many weeks in a year and with the necessary tapering before the race and subsequent rest period, I'd be slashing out some time when I could be doing much more meaningful things.

The NYC Half on March 20th seems like a much better goal for me at this point, and I intend to attack it with my renewed spirit and vigor.  Hopefully I'll get around to posting on the blog more often as well.
